FIRST THING FIRST!

This morning I jumped out of bed and couldn’t seem to get to work fast enough. This afternoon I get to drive to Los Angeles, set up a table, and share the need to comfort hospitalized children with over 300 people. I love days like today when I have plenty to do, and am excited to do it!

While I was running around my heart began to feel heavy. I kept thinking, There’s something I’m missing. What am I forgetting?

I stopped for a moment, poured myself a  second cup of coffee, and looked quietly out my kitchen window. Within a moment I noticed that the calm of the morning had received a great wind, and the last of winter leaves were falling from my trees. I had to smile because we just cleaned up the mess, and now there would be another pile of leaves to clean up.   But… it was at that moment where I realized what I was forgetting.

Each morning I wake up, grab my coffee, and open my Bible. I give the first of my day to reading the Word, and this morning I neglected to do that. This morning I gave my first to the “plenty” of things I have to do today. When I found what was missing within my morning I stopped, prayed for all those I love and then my heart heard the Lord whisper… “But that is the time to be careful! Beware that in your plenty you do not forget the LORD your God and disobey his commands, regulations, and decrees that I am giving you today. Deuteronomy 8:11

And the first commandment would be… THOU SHALL HAVE NO OTHER GODS BEFORE ME!

I don’t blame God for wanting to be remembered first thing in the morning, because I would LOVE IT if my children called me each morning, told me how much they loved me, and then shared their needs for the day. It actually would be a great gift  if they did that. I would know “specifically” what to pray for!

  1. Always, always, the first thing should be to thank God for the day. Then I thank Him for the warm bed I just left, the roof and walls which shielded my from the weather, the hot shower I can take, etc, etc…finally the coffee and the morning devotional to be sent out to more than 100 sisters and brothers in Christ from 4 continents! Gina, you are right on target with this, thanks to a little nudge from an all-powerful hand of a perfectly loving Father.
